The story appears simple on the surface, but is revealed, especially after multiple viewings, as more multi-layered and textured than Cassavetes at his best. Ostensibly it concerns a 14-year old Catholic girl, Wynne (Agutter) growing up in this post-modern wasteland, who develops a crush on her much older adoptive brother (Marshall)- a crush which perversely deepens and grows into infatuation once she starts to believe he is the local sex killer. This is in itself an idea that makes you sit up and jolt, but as the narrative develops, it continues not necessarily along a linear path but in several confusing and fascinating directions: the family's history, (detailed effectively in chilling flashback during an improvised seance) is a chequered one, and has suffered at least one major relocation and upheaval in the last ten years. At the crux, however, it's the depiction of socialal changes that make I Start Counting so fascinating and elevate its language far beyond the confines of the standard horror film. The major subtext- that teenage girls were maturing more quickly than before, and developing full sexual and romantic appetites (even if in thought rather than deed) but were not possessed of enough discretion to make the right choices- was a step forward for a genre in which its young females had previously been portrayed as bimbo victims (Cover Girl Killer and The Night Caller spring to mind), but not one that all viewers would necessarily agree with. But most striking of all, and possibly the most enduring image which the viewer will take away with them, is of the masterful symbolism with which director Greene invests every shot. Every inch of the Kinch family's world- their house, their walls, their TV, Agutters underwear, bedroom furniture and toys, Sutcliffe's clothes, Marshalls van, the local Catholic church, their town centre, their record shop) - is painted a bright, scintillating white- a white which, by inference, is slowly becoming smudged and corrupted with the dirt of the outside world. White also symbolises, of course, purity and innocence (two qualities Catholic schoolgirls are supposed to hold dear), and it is into this world of innocence that the ever-present red bus (a symbol of violation and penetration), conducted by the lecherous yet similarly juvenile Simon Ward, makes regular journeys. The allegory is further expanded in one scene where Agutter believes she sees the Christ figure in church weeping blood: by the time we acknowledge it, its gone, but the seed has already been planted. Rarely in a genre production has the use of colour and background been so important or effective in creating a uniformity of mood. I Start Counting is as near-perfect an end to a decade as one could hope for, and exactly the kind of film people should be making now- which is, of course, exactly why they never will. 老爷子的新电影看一部少一部，镜头下的墨西哥空旷且风光无限，人物简单故事一般，就是喜欢他的节奏和只属于他电影的美感。

怎么变成糖水片了，故事编得也太敷衍。难道老了之后就会变成这样吗，返璞归真一片祥和，电影内外的情节发展构成互文了。
老爷子的电影一直都是质量的保证，就像本人一样永远逗人喜爱啊，不过这次的电影失手了。故事陈旧且水平不行，毫无新意，只够两星水准。

孤立作为一部剧情片来看的话问题多多，平淡的剧情缓慢的节奏，以及正反派在大部分时间里都在无所事事，但放到冬木自导自演的作品体系里却能看到些许不同的东西，这一次的老头没有了以往外露的倔强，更多是一种对年龄和时代的妥协，每每露出的淡淡微笑也是在之前的作品里很难见到的，于是结尾看似突兀的反高潮的处理反而显得合情合理，此外有几幕夕阳与老人拍的确实很美，总之虽然远不是冬木最好作品那一序列的，但作为他这个年龄的作品，是不是也说明了老大爷内心的些许变化？
感觉这个片子问题还挺多的，首先是除了东木和后来小镇的老板娘，剩余的演员表演痕迹实在太重；然后里面人物情绪的转折经常不make sensé （我说那个小男孩）；还有就是对于墨西哥人的stereotype，感觉拿着枪的黑帮各个像傻逼。故事不复杂，但完成得不是很好。后半部份的音乐还算加分。
做为男二: 拉福完全失败。选角，剧本，人设表演全面垮塌。
一老一少，一段road trip，路上遇见的人都帮他们，女人爱主角，问题都能迎刃而解。不行，即便这是东木的，也不行。
谁给标记的“惊悚”？？明明很温情，一部成长片子。
